New scoreboard at Hunter Field in Cranbrook, BC, with Bolen Engineering sponsor panel

Game day at a ball field already has its own soundtrack. Cleats in the dirt. Coaches working the fence line. That sharp crack off the bat.

Now Hunter Field and Daloise Field at Confederation Park in Cranbrook, BC have one more piece of the picture: new scoreboards built through a partnership between the Cranbrook Minor Ball Association (CMBA), Bolen Engineering, and other local contributors.

Bolen Engineering donated the structural design and engineering for the foundations, steel support columns, and framework. Simple idea, real impact: local people pitching in so the next generation of players gets a better field.

Location: Confederation Park, Cranbrook, BC

The new scoreboards are up at Hunter Field and Daloise Field, two busy community diamonds that see games, practices, tournaments, and a lot of dusty shoes.

It is a practical upgrade, sure. Players, coaches, officials, and families can actually track the game at a glance. But it also adds a little spark to the whole place. A scoreboard changes the feel of a field fast.

How the design works

A scoreboard looks simple until the wind starts shoving on it. Then it becomes a full structural system.

The framework behind the panel collects the load and keeps the sign acting like one piece instead of a rattly collection of parts. The connections matter here more than people think. Bolts, welds, plates, and attachment points have to actually pass the force where it needs to go without slop, distortion, or weak handoffs.

From there, the steel support columns do the heavy lifting. They carry the weight of the scoreboard, but they also resist bending and lateral forces when the panel catches wind. At the base, the columns transfer those forces through base plates and anchor bolts into the concrete foundation.

The foundation finishes the job by spreading those loads safely into the ground while also resisting sliding, overturning, frost effects, and long-term movement. In structural engineering BC work, that part is non-negotiable.

Load path, start to finish: wind hits the panel, the framework collects it, the steel support columns carry it down, the base connection transfers it into the foundation, and the foundation sends it into the ground. Clean load path. No mystery. Just solid structural engineering for community and sports infrastructure.

Why it matters to Cranbrook

This project works because it is local businesses showing up for a local field. CMBA brought the need. Bolen Engineering donated the structural design and engineering for the foundations, steel support columns, and framework. New Dawn Developments donated time and materials. Put it together and you get a community build, not just a construction job.

That is the real value at Confederation Park. Hunter Field and Daloise Field get practical sports infrastructure that improves the game-day experience, and Cranbrook gets another example of what happens when local people back local spaces.

Bolen Engineering has roots in Cranbrook, Creston, and Nelson, so this one lands close to home. These are the kinds of places where families gather, kids play, and the work is visible right away.

Built for the next game, and the one after that

Good community infrastructure does not need to shout. It just needs to work, year after year, while the game carries on.

That is what these scoreboards do for Cranbrook: solid structure, clear purpose, immediate value.

A scoreboard keeps the score. The structure keeps the scoreboard standing. The community keeps the game going.
